What counts as an anagram

A true anagram uses every letter exactly as many times as the original does — no adding, no dropping. listen and silent are a perfect pair, so are dormitory and dirtyroom. We list those first. Below them you'll find partial anagrams: real words you can spell using some of your letters, which is what most people actually want when they're stuck on a word puzzle.

Using it as an anagram maker for names

Enter a first name, a full name, or a short phrase and the generator will find whatever real words live inside it. Names rarely produce one perfect anagram, but they almost always produce several shorter ones — handy for puzzles, party games, and personalised word art. Spaces, apostrophes and hyphens are stripped automatically, so O'Brien and O Brien give the same result.

Why some words are missing

Our dictionary is built only from public-domain and openly licensed word lists — around 220,000 words. That means a few very obscure terms and most proper nouns are not included. We would rather show you a clean, defensible list than pad it with words no puzzle would accept.
